Large scale trial transportation of power lithium batteries by railways in China
On the morning of the 19th, a train loaded with power type lithium battery containers departed from Yibin Port in Sichuan and headed west towards Jinshanwei in Shanghai. On that day, the synchronous power type lithium battery trial operation special train was set up in the three provinces of Sichuan, Chongqing, and Guizhou. This is a large-scale trial transportation of power lithium batteries by China's railways, which will help promote the global circulation of domestic power lithium battery products.
Compared with road and waterway transportation, railway transportation has advantages such as large capacity, short cycle, high safety, moderate cost, and green environmental protection. The successful trial operation will open up the domestic power type lithium battery railway transportation mode. The relevant person in charge of China Railway Chengdu Group Co., Ltd. stated that the railway transportation of power type lithium batteries can not only effectively reduce battery supply delays caused by unpredictable factors such as traffic congestion and severe weather, greatly reduce the risk of production line stagnation, but also further improve the continuity and stability of vehicle production, enhance supply chain safety and resilience.
With the rapid development of China's new energy vehicle and power lithium battery industries, as well as the rapid increase in transportation demand, in January 2024, China Railway Group Co., Ltd. established a special team for the trial operation of power lithium-ion batteries, actively promoting research on the safety conditions for railway transportation trial operation of power batteries. In September 2024, China Railway Group Co., Ltd. issued the "Railway Safety Transportation Conditions for Power Lithium ion Batteries for Electric Vehicles in 40 Foot Containers". China Railway Chengdu Bureau Group Co., Ltd. formulated a detailed transportation pilot plan in accordance with the requirements and jointly determined the trial operation plan with relevant provinces, cities, and enterprises. The special container used this time has functions such as flame retardant insulation, pressure relief and exhaust, which will provide safety guarantee for the railway transportation of power type lithium batteries.
The launch of this railway trial operation project will not only enhance China's position in the global green energy supply chain, but also promote international production capacity cooperation and push China's new energy products to better enter the world.
